SOUND DESIGN
On this page we will be showing annotating real media text and analysing its sound. We will be stating what we like and dislike like about the sound choices of the trailer. We will then be using these as a inspiration for our sound choices in our horror movie trailer. I will be taking screen grabs and showing what sound clips we plan to be using in our trailer.
CARRIE (2013)
The sound is Carrie is very good and unique. Through the whole trailer the sound is slowly but gradually gets faster towards the end of the trailer. This makes the trailer engaging to viewers because early on from the trailer you can tell something is going to break the peaceful sound in the trailer. What also makes the horror trailers sound engaging is the use of foley sound effects in the background to the score sound which was calm and relaxing. Also when the sound goes really quick around the end when the antagonist is presented which is good but maybe could of been improved by having the sound last a bit longer to maybe strike more fear into the audience.

EVIL DEAD (2013)
The sound in the Evil Dead is the best sound we have come across. It uses sound that the audience are likely to always remember. For example it use a scream that is not a usual scream because of its extremely high pitch of it and the length it. As it starts off calm and uses a good rhythm when the credits are shown. It use Foley SFX to again have a rhyme in the trailers sound which again engages the reader. As the sound continues to get faster the sound in the trailer gets louder and louder until it goes quiet which is common in horror trailers. After the silence you hear loud crashing and screaming which leaves the audience on edge. I

The Purge (2013)
The sound in the Horror trailer The Purge starts of very peaceful and calm. The first 20 seconds makes it seem like your not even watching a horror trailer. Next foley SFX is used in between silence and dialogue between the characters. It continues to use sirens in the trailer which engages the reader throughout the trailer. It also uses a long siren which again is engaging to the reader because not until about three quarters into the trailer do you get the feel of a classic horror movie. This is done by adding drones which is commonly used to strike fear into the audience. You also hear a sword being brought which is unusually loud but is used because they want to make the audience fearful. Then at end to an extent everything goes crazy with combination of screams, stabbing and screaming which is exciting for the audience. You also hear drones in the background before their is silence.

The Visit (2015)
Like many horror The Visit's sound starts off peaceful and the sound in no way connotes horror or fear. Then after the grandparents say"goodnight" their is a silence which breaks the equilibrium but silence i used quickly but throughout the trailer. Their are loud scratches of the grandmother which is foley sfx but is loud so it can be remembered by the audience. You also hear drones and high pitched noises which is intimidating for the audience because they feel like something is coming which is the fear of the unknown. Near the end you hear heavy breathing and a short but terrifying scream which then goes to silence.

Poltergeist (2015)In the beginning trailer uses music that is soft and peaceful. It gives the audience a clear idea that this is the equilibrium. It then use thuds to break the equilibrium. The sound in this trailer is very good mainly because it uses the same drone almost through out the whole trailer. There are high pitched noise which hopes to intimidate the audience. Silence is used incredibly well in the trailer as it creates anticipation for the audience. It also uses high pitch screams occasionally in the trailer. Near the end of the trailer it in between the dialogue between different characters their is silence.

Friday the 13th (2009)
The trailers sound starts off with calm and happy music which shows the equilibrium. The music shows that the characters are not in any problems and are all happy. The break in equilibrium shows when their is silence in the trailer. It shows that things are starting to go wrong and the antagonist is beginning to kill. After more silence their are screams and thuds which shows the kills of the characters. The sounds make the kills more vicious and more engaging to the audience. There are even more screams and silence in the trailer. The trailer towards the end has a lot of screams and then has a drone to end the trailer.

SOUND INSPIRATION
Drones
Below are a few drones that I like. Drones are used to attack the audience because it is used during throughout the trailer which makes the trailer engaging.
Screams
Below are a few screams that I like. When screaming is heard in a trailer it strikes fear into the audience. It makes it feel real because of the human sound that is heard when in fear or shock.
Thuds
Below are a few thuds that I like. They are used in trailers to make hits more louder and stronger to the audience. Also thuds are used to make blackouts in the trailer more effective .
Music
Below are horror music that I like. They are used mostly throughout the trailer which gives the trailer the horror or scary feel. Most no lyrics are used but are sometimes used as iconic sounds for audiences to remember and recognize the horror film.

Sound Animatic
I will be using Abode Premier Pro to create the sound for our trailer. I will be adding sound to our already made animatic.
The first sound that was added was the bell sound which appears three times in the beginning of the animatic. This is shown below which is the exact sound that is being inserted into the animatic.
We were then given a folder that had many different sounds that we will use in our trailer. I will be replacing the sound on our animatic with the sound that is in the folder which include drones and thuds.
On the right is a screenshot showing the first sound that is added to the storyboard animatic. The green bar being in line with the purple show that their is a bell ring at the beginning of each shot. This makes the beginning of the animatic slow and is engaging to the audience. in the background are drones which can be used to attack the audience. As the beginning of the animatic is very slow adding the drones will make it engaging to the reader and makes it effective. Below is the drone that was added which was in the background of the bell drum sound.
On the right is how in the beginning the trailers sound is. It shows how the two sounds that were added sound together.
On the left is a screenshot showing the sound that was next added. What i found difficult was using different sounds but making them sound good together. Like most horror trailers their are loud thuds used when captions are shown or even the production company is shown. This is used to keep the reader engaged because when you hear a thud the audience will be easily grabbed to the trailer. Below is the thud that was used just when the production team logo appears. Also below is the drone that was used after the production team logo appears. it plays to to keep the audience engaged by intimidating continuous sound. Also the third sound below is a scream which is very scary for the audience. The scream of a female is common in horror films, and is very engaging to the audience because it is a common human reaction
On the right is a screenshot showing the progress on adding sound our animatic. After the scream their is a thud right on the change of shot. The same thud appears when their are black flashes. This can be engaging to the audience because it is fast and sudden. Below is the thud that is actually added to our animatic. The next sound that is added is a thud which appears at the same time of the next shot as shown on the right. The second thud is shown below also.
We were beginning to find it difficult to be able to add thuds that sounded good and not to fictional. I was also finding it difficult to put drones in the background and know when to end the drone. However we were able to find a drone that would sound good and we discovered where the best place to end it would be. The thuds again would be heard during the black screen flashes on one of the shots. Below is the drone and thud that we used. However I was able to easily add sound that will be heard right before a black screen and before silents. This sound could be used

Towards the end of our trailer we will use a different drone that will that will intimidate the audience. The sound on the right called drmatic meets erie which i used just before silence in the trailer. Finally to end the trailer the steel rod sound is used.

Finally to the end the trailer the three sound files above were used and on the left is a file that shows how they sound together.
